Farm Play Set

Farm play sets are oldies but goodies for practicing developmental skills and are definitely a favorite around our clinic. Most farm play sets are designed for children ages 1 and older. Here are a few ideas for use at home:

Speech & Language: Work on understanding and/or use of vocabulary with animal names, actions (sleep, run, jump, walk, etc.), and descriptive words (colors, size, spots, etc.). Practice early speech sounds by producing animal sounds. Pretend play is a great way to model language and work on turn-taking skills.

Fine Motor/Visual Motor: Your child can practice grasping by picking up the animals. You can also have them practice stacking the animals or balance them on different parts of the barn. They can also work on visual scanning by hiding animals around the barn and having them look for them.

Sensory: Use a dry erase marker to make the animal 'dirty' and then wash them in soapy water. Have the animals play in 'mud' (chocolate pudding) and then give them a bath. You can also place the animals in various other sensory bins.

Gross Motor: Practice animal walks for each of the animals. You can also set up an obstacle course with the animals placed throughout it.

You can purchase farm play sets through our Therapy Shop here: Fisher Price Little People Farm or Battat Barn Playset.
