Chunky wooden puzzles can be used for more than just their traditional method to increase developmental skills. Most chunky wooden puzzles are recommended for children ages 2 and older. Here are a few ideas for use at home:
Speech & Language: Practice pretend and imaginative play by using the puzzle pieces as toys and work on early developmental sounds by producing the noises that go with the pieces. Your child can also practice requesting by asking for which piece they want. You can also teach your child turn-taking by having each of you go one at a time to place pieces in the puzzle.
Fine Motor/Visual Motor: Placing pieces in a puzzle allows your child to work on grasping, manipulation, eye-hand coordination, motor planning, matching, and crossing midline.
Sensory: Place pieces in a sensory bin and have your child find them. You can also place pieces around the room and have your child push a cart or laundry basket around the room to collect the pieces.
Gross Motor: Place pieces around the room and have your child walk, run, hop, bear crawl, or skip to get the pieces. You can also place the puzzle on the floor and have your child stand and squat to place the pieces in the puzzle.
